NOTES FROM THE FIELD
When dry weather is certain and attack from the insect hoards is constant, the OR Bug Bivy is just the shelter called for. It can be used with or without the overhead pole depending on how light and compact it needs to be. It is a surprisingly compact little bundle, but can make a huge contribution to the comfort of the user in bug country.
On summer river trips it can be used in conjunction with an overhead tarp. In desert or tropical environments there are many times when this lightweight shelter could protect you from the "little crawlies" that might try to share your bed. It can also be used as protection from these critters in certain indoor sleeping arrangements. If you travel enough, you will eventually stay in a hostel with some of these unwanted guests and your Bug Bivy will save the night.
High-volume foot section The foot section has enough volume to allow the sleeping bag to maintain full loft at the feet.
Single Delrin pole These not only keep the fabric off the head, but also promote better air circulation and venting. The poles are made of shock-corded Delrin with aluminum ferrules. Delrin allows the poles to conform to the tight radius of the bivy without the extreme pre-bending that would be necessary with aluminum poles, allowing them to pack smaller.
The pole is contained by a tunnel of nylon webbing sewn to the outside of the no-see-um netting. One end is sewn shut and the other is accessed by a flap of webbing locked in place by a Velcro® tab.
Small internal zippered mesh pocket At the head of the sack, on the inside, is a small mesh pouch to hold eyeglasses and other small items that might otherwise find their way to the bottom of the sack.
1.7-oz. taffeta nylon, Hydroseal® coated floor material Taffeta provides the perfect combination of light weight and durability for use in the floor of a bivy. It is coated with our exclusive, proprietary Hydroseal® coating which provides a barrier to water and soil. As with any of our products using Hydroseal®, these bivy sacks benefit from the great durability of this tenacious coating.
4-foot End Opening Zipper Access to the bivy is through the end of this sack, as it is with the others in our line. In the case of the bug bivy this allows the user to easily find the zipper in the dark and flip the canopy overhead to exit in a hurry, if the need should arise.
Guy line loops These loops provide anchor points for guy lines or tent stakes
They are located in the following places for a total of five:
* Two at ground level seam rear/foot section
* Two at ground level seam front
* One at top of overhead pole
They can be very helpful when leaving the sack for a time if the wind might blow it away.
Allows the bivy to be strung from trees, ski poles, etc. when traveling without the pole.
Stabilizes the bivy in the wind<. Note: These are light-duty loops and are not as strong as those placed in tents.
No-See-Um Netting The body of the bivy is constructed from high-quality netting. The distinction must be strongly made between mosquito and no-see-um netting. Biting insects the size of a no-see-um will fly right through mosquito netting without so much as a bent proboscis. Look closely at the tight pattern of our netting and you will see what we mean. In addition to its insect-proofness, this netting lives up to the strict quality standards we have set for fabrics used in our products. The seams in the bug bivy will hold together for many years of comfortable nights.
Sleeping Pad Straps (patent # 5,941,264) Two pad straps hold an Exped mat or other sleeping pads in place. This is a surprisingly important feature for keeping the sack upright through the night and limiting the tendency for the user to roll over onto the netting. This feature is unique to Outdoor Research Bivy Sacks.
